Mitten kits for Christmas Lapaspaketteja jouluksi

Kirjoneuleiden ystävälle tarvikepaketti lapasiin on varmasti mukava joululahja.
Eurooppaan lähetettävät tilaukset tulee tehdä viimeistään 12.12 ja muualle ulkomaille viimeistään 29.11.

Christmas is coming closer, and  you can find our naturally dyed yarns and mitten kits only from my online shop or on Saturdays from the market Kauppatori in Helsinki. Possibly DH is at the market on some other days just before Christmas, but I'll post the other dates than Saturdays here in my blog later. We are not going to any  Christmas fair this year.

The mail is slower before the holidays, and if you want to make sure that you recieve your order before  Christmas, please place your order to Europe before December 12th or to other countries before November 29th. Mitten kits will make a wonderful present for a knitter:)

Olen tekemässä uutta lapasmallia tarvikepakettia varten. Äitini teki minulle lapaset vuosia sitten ja tämä malli pohjautuu niihin lapasiin, itse asiassa tästä tulee neljällä eri värityksellä oleva sarja vuodenaikojen mukaan nimettyjä lapasia. Alla  esimakua tekeillä olevasta talvitunnelmaisesta lapasesta:)
Toivon saavani ensimmäiset mallit ja tarvikepaketit kauppaan parin viikon sisään.

My indigo fermentation vat follow-up Lopputulos indigon käymiskyyppikokeilustani

Last summer I tried indigo fermentation vat, here is the posting about it. After the first two weeks I didn't write anything about it and you might have guessed that it didn't work out. The bucket with the vat was in the greenhouse until autumn and nothing more happened in it. In August after one month from the beginning, I dyed a small skein in it, but got only very pale blue, so there was a small amount of reduced indigo in the vat, but not near as much as there should have been considering the amount of indigo I put in it in the beginning. With that amount I could have dyed at least two kilos of good blue with chemical reduction.
Last week, just before the cold and snow came here, I emptied the bucket to my big indigo pot, added hydrosulfit to remove the oxygen and dyed. I got blue, but now quite so dark as I would have expected, so I think some of the indigo was ruined in the experiment.

I have been trying to think what went wrong, and even though I have read that someone has succeeded  in low temperatures, I now believe that low night temperatures (18-20°C/64°F) together with the strong fluctuation of the temperature was one big reason. Helen Melvin's book and blog say that the temperature needs to be stable and high enough (30-40C/86-104°F), and have to belive her!
After the first week there was one cold night (12°C/53°F) and also the day after was cool, and it seems that after that nothing much happened. The pH stayed 9 all rest of the summer, but the vat never started to ferment properly again.
I will have to think about compost or some other place where the temperature stays more stable. Apparently urine fermentation vat is easier in cold climates than this kind of madder-bran vat.

Another possible trouble was that the fermentation was too strong in the beginning, it lowered the pH too quickly and too low, and I should have kept better eye on that in the first couple of days, adding more lye couple of times during the daytime, so that the vat hadn't become too sour. I will have think of ways to slow down the fermentation..
Now I have all winter to plan how to try again nex summer, I would really love to get the fermentation vat going, so that i wouldn't need any chemicals. Of course I could use electricity.
I have to admire dyers of old times, managing without any chemicals or electricity!

A big grasshopper seemed to think it was warm enough on top of the dark vat and plastic. I saw it there basking in the sun in August couple of days, and I have never seen so big grasshopper before:)

Autumn in dye garden Värikasvien syksyä

Puutarha valmistautuu talveen.

Garden is ready for winter. We have had frosty nights and day temperatures are close to zero, but no snow yet. Many plants are still green, above wild  Hedge Bedstraw (Galium mollugo) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) leaves. Both plants give color, red and yellow.

Madder leaves are dyeing and brown. Some of my plants are three years old and now it would be a good time to lift them up for dyeing, but I will leave them at least until spring. Then it is easier to replant the smaller roots. These old plants also flowered this summer, and in August I noticed seeds developing, but when I checked them next time in the end of September, the seeds had vanished, either somone had eaten them or they had fallen off. Next year I have to be more careful with them!
I could also dye with these dyed leaves of madder. According to Jenny Dean's Wild Color they yield coral pink, but I haven't had time to try them out.

My most important dyeplant, Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) has now died, but some woad plants which accidentally grew in the same bed, are still green.

Woad photographed in the beginning of October, and in spite of the feezing nights, it was still green a week ago (first week of November), when I harvested the rest of the leaves and dyed with them. I got 2,5kg of leaves and dyed 500grams of medium blue yarn from them. Perhaps the leaves were a little damaged by frosts, because I think I got darker blue from the same amount of leaves earlier. Anyway, I am pleased with the color I got:)

I didn't have time to try some of my dyeplants at all this summer, like the Dyer's Greenweed (Genista tinctoria) above. I  have grown several plants of them from seeds, but luckily the are long-lived and bigger next summer, and there is more to harvest from them:)
There is so much to experiment and dye and always so little time. Another plant which I failed to harvest in time this summer, was Japanese Grass, Arthraxon hispidus. It was easy to grow and it grew well, but I didn't have time to harvest it until it was already flowering and going to seed, and so I only got very pale yellow from it. I was propably too late, but luckily I got seeds from it and I'll try again next summer ... and try to be in time then, before the flower stalks come up.

Even though this last picture has autumn frost, it is still an image of hope of spring to me. My Hellebores in the woodland garden are one of my most favourite plants, I will never get tired of them, no matter what the season, and they bring spring with their flowers.

More Cortinarius dyeing Lisää värjäystä verihelttaseitikeillä

IN ENGLISH
Last week I tried another kind of thing with caps of Cortinarius semisanguineus. I started thinking weather the dyestuffs would come off the mushrooms better when the mordanted yarns was in the same bath with the caps. This is what happens with madder root, if you have the root pieces in the same bath with the yarn, more dye gets released from the roots when the yarn soaks up the already released dyemolecules from the bath.
So I put dry caps to soak in tap-hot water and added the mordanted (alum 10%, Cream of Tartar 4%)white yarn at the same time. In the next morning the water was cold, but the yarn had taken up the red pigments even in cold soaking. The white yarn was now nice light rose red, the picture above. None of the yellow dyestuffs had yet dissolved in the bath, or taken to the yarn.

IN ENGLISH
I heated the bath with mushrooms and yarn in it, and when it got hotter, the color also became stronger. I didn't let the temperature go over 80°C (176°F), and after one hour I took the yarns away from the bath. The color was nice red, picture of it below. I had 70grams of dry caps to 100grams of yarn, with bigger amount of mushrooms the color would have propably become darker. Because I didn't crush the dry mushrooms, they wer easy to get off the yarn after dyeing, so there were no problem there either.
Clearly this method gave different color than the one I used in my previous posting.

Sitten keitin liemen sienineen, reilun tunnin verran.

Then I boiled the bath with mushrooms, little over one hour. I strained the bath and dyed the same amount of yarn in it. It was clear to see how the red pigments were used in the first bath and the yellows were left for the second, even after boiling there was no more red dyes left. You can see below that the second bath was giving orange yarn. After the yarn cooled in the bath overnight, it was nice quite strong yellowish orange.
I think this is how I'm going to dye with these caps next time, too:)
