Bark mordanted madder Kuoripuretettua krappia

This blogging does not belong at all to Christmas:) but when last week I had to dye more reddish brown for Cloudberry mitten kits, I remembered the bark mordanting experiments I did last summer.

I cold dyed with madder last summer, and I wanted to see how mordanting with tannins from barks would affect the color in the same dyebath. Usually the wool is mordanted with alum and cream of tartar which make the colors fast, there are a few exceptions which don't need mordanting. Barks contain a lot of tannins which attach to the fiber and then with other dye molecules can form insoluble compounds.
Bark dyes were mostly used to get greys and black with iron, but I found very little information about mordanting wool with tannin bearing barks. (Tannins were and are used together with alum to mordant sellulose fibers, there are tons of information about that.)
According to Cardon oak barks were used as early as 900AD in Japan to dye silk (together with other dyestuffs) and there are also recipes in a european dye manual from 1850s which use oak and alder bark with other dyestuffs (Cardon p.413).
In Jenny Dean's book Colours from Nature, there is a good recipe for mordanting wool with tannins (oakgalls and sumach leaves) and in her blog she has also written about tannin mordanting, here. In older Finnish dye books I couldn't find anything about mordanting wool with tannins.

Tässä sitten valmiita lankoja väripataan, oikealta lukien purettamaton, aluna/viinikivipuretus (10%/ 5%), lepänkuoripuretus 2vrk, tammenkuoripuretus 2vrk, lepänkuoripuretus 12vrk, tammenkuoripuretus 12vrk ja viimeisenä lepänkuoripuretus keittämällä.
Kuoripuretukset tapahtuivat seuraavasti:

Ín the picture above, the yarns are ready to go to the dye bath, they are from the right to left: unmordanted,
alum and cream of tartar mordanted (Al 10% and Cot 5%),
alder bark cold mordanted 2 days,
oak bark cold mordanted 2 days,
alder bark cold mordanted 12 days,
oak bark cold mordanted 12 days
and last one in the left alder bark mordanted in simmering bath.
The bark mordanting went like this:
Oak barks (I didn't have the exact amount written down, half a bucketful) soaked first for several months (because I didn't have time to do anything about them), the picture of them soaking is in the top of this posting. I strained the barks without simmering and put 600grams of unmordanted yarn to the bath and left it in the greenhouse in the summer. The temperature was between 20-25C. I took the first yarns away after 2 days and the rest were left to soak for 12 days.
Alder barks
- 600grams of old alder barks soaked for a month (again one week could have been enough, I just didn't have time), then they were simmered for about three hours, and strained. I put 200grams of wool to the bath and raised the temperature to simmer again for one hour, and then let it cool overnight.
The yarn on the left is from this bath.
-I took the already used barks, added water and simmered them for two hours and then strained the bath. I added 600grams of unmordanted yarn to the bath and left them to steep in the greenhouse. After 2 days I took one skein away from the bath and the rest were in the bath for 12 days.
The baths didn't ferment, nor was there any mold in it. The only thing was that at first I didn't have a lid on the buckets, and small insects flew in and drowned in the bath.. but I doubt they had any inpact to the mordanting:).

In English
I rinsed the mordanted yarns separately, the rinsing water from the oak bark mordanted yarns was clear from the beginning, but some color came out of the alder bark mordanted yarns, I quess alder bark had also some other dyestuffs besides tannins and these other ones didn't attach themselves very tightly, at least not in the cold bath.
I put the yarns then to the madder bath in my greenhouse (1kg of madder soaked first overnight, to 1kg of fiber)
The yarn mordanted with alum turned red right the first day, but the bark mordanted yarns took color slower. The temperature of the bath was around 25C, quite low.
The yarns were in the bath for 9 days, and day 3 the bath started to ferment like it always does.

Here are the results of these experiments.
The red yarn on the top was mordanted with alum and CoT,
then next was unmordanted,
then oak bark coldmordanted 2 days,
oak bark coldmordanted 12 days,
alder bark coldmordanted 2 days,
alder bark coldmordanted 12 days
and alder bark hot mordanted sample.
The alum mordanted was good red, but there isn't very much difference in other samples. The unmordanted yarn is paler than others and alder bark mordanted yarns are more yellowish tone than oak bark mordanted ones.. that is difficult to see in the picture but it is clear in reality. A surprise was also that alder bark hot mordanted yarn was paler and more yellowish than cold mordanted yarns, well not much, but there was a difference!
So when mordanting with barks it is not necessary to heat the bath, you can do it outside in the summer and save energy (even if not time).
Also mordanting for two days was enough, there wasn't difference in the final color even if the yarns were longer in the mordanting bath.
I had kept these samples outside in daylight (there wan't much sun) in September for three weeks and all others held their color, except on unmordanted yarn there was slight fading.
The dyestuffs in madder are quite lightfast and the change in unmordanted yarn wasn't much, but it is advantageous to use bark mordants even though the color achieved is close to the unmordanted, the lightfasteness is better with bark mordants and alum mordant.
I was a little dissappointed that I didn't get red with bark mordants in cold bath, and only the use of alum gave me the red I wanted.
It will be interesting to try next how the bark mordants (tannins) react with other natural dyes, I am sure there are differences if the dyestuffs are anthraquinones, flavonoids or something other:)
With madder it works!

In English
Then the dyeing I did last week: I had mordanted white yarn with oak barks (the soaking water of the oak barks strained and yarns added, heated to 60C for two hours, then let cool for two days).
I rinsed the mordanted yarns and added them to the madder bath (100% madder first soaked overnight), raised the temperature to 50-60C (little warmer than hand hot), kept it there for two hours and then let it cool overnight.
What a surprise: now the yarns were redder and stronger colored than when dyed in colder in the greenhouse. Well, the color is still not really red, like what I get with alum mordant, more strong brownish orange, but anyway a stronger color than what I got in the greenhouse with the same oak bark mordant.
So even though the red dyestuffs in madder attach themselves to the alummordanted yarn in lower temperatures (below 30C), they don't do so with tannin mordanted yarn, but the temperature needs to be higher with bark mordanted yarns if I want stronger and redder color. Strange, I need to read more to find out why!

Christmas at the market Joulumyynti torilla

Joulu on jo lähellä :)

Tervetuloa torilla lankaostoksille.

Today it is gloomy and warmer again, but last week we had couple of cold days, and the garden was beautiful when it was all frosty, even the sun was peaking, a rarity this time of year. These pictures were taken around 1 pm, and there wasn't very much light even then, and after 3 pm it is getting dark. Still couple of weeks of this until the darkest day of the year, and then the days begin to get longer and there will be more light again:) Christmas is getting close.

This year we didn't get a booth at the Christmas Fair like before, instead we are selling only at the market Kauppatori and from the online shop. My husband will be at the market on Saturdays and next week Wednesday Dec.9th and Sunday Dec.13th (unless the weather changes to very bad), from 9.30am to 3 pm. Darkness comes early so the market closes early, too.
I won't be in Helsinki at all this year, I'll be home making more yarns and mittens to sell:)
Welcome to the market if you are in Helsinki.

New shop Uusi kauppa

In English
Last week we had trouble with the emails in our shop, and it turned out that there was a failure in the structure of the shop, so my friend who knows more than I do about these kind of things, suggested that we put up a new and better shop. And so we have been doing.
Here you can go and see our new shop, there will be some changes yet, but at least you can go and take a look:)
There are several improvements, the shop is now also in Finnish, which I'm sure the finnish-speaking appreciate:) The shop also adds the shipping cost to your shopping cart automatically, so you see immediately how much the shipping is going to cost. There is also an option to pay directly to our bank account, for Finns and within EU it is a good option, but of course you can pay through Paypal like before. I will still have to write the invoices by hand and send them to you, but I hope that we'll get you an option to go straight to the Paypal site also, after Christmas, at the latest (this could be done right right now, but I have to dye and make more things for the Christmas to sell, so I have more time for that change later).
The only inconvenience is that you will have to register again when you buy, all the old customer records will be destroyed with the old shop. I'm sorry about that, but I hope the new shop will make up to it in other ways. Thank you for your patience, and thanks also Janne, for putting up the new shop.

The new shop has been a lot of work, it has taken almost all my time in the last week, but soon I can get back to my dye pots and will have more new yarns.. actually I have some yarns already dyed before this shop thing, they are just waiting to be reskeined. I have also knitted a new pair of mittens, with blue/grey/brown coloring, but the first pair wasn't exactly how I thought they would be, so I knitted another pair, slightly different, and now I think the right ones would be in-between these two.. so I will have to knit yet another pair:) DH had the first pair at the market last Saturday, and sold them right away.. so I quess they were not so bad after all:)
Anyway, I will have a new mitten pattern and kit perhaps next week.
